[776] **"With harsh speech" (pharusena), in the phrase "one should not respond to them with harsh speech,"** means: with rough speech. **"Should not respond"** means: one should not speak in retaliation; one should not revile in return one who reviles; one should not scold in return one who scolds; one should not quarrel in return with one who quarrels; one should not create quarrels, should not create strife, should not create contention, should not create disputes, should not create brawls; one should abandon, dispel, bring to an end, and reduce to non-existence quarrels, strife, contention, disputes, and brawls; one should be far from, abstaining, and refraining from quarrels, strife, contention, disputes, and brawls — departed from them, released from them, freed from them, detached from them; one should dwell with a mind rid of boundaries. Therefore it is said: "one should not respond to them with harsh speech."
