[782] **One should not be negligent in the teaching (sāsana) of Gotama**: in the teaching of Gotama, that is, in the teaching of the Buddha, the teaching of the Victor (Jina), the teaching of the Tathāgata, the teaching of the Deva, the teaching of the Arahant. **Should not be negligent**: one should be one who acts with care, one who acts with perseverance, one who acts unremittingly, one whose conduct is unshrinking, one who does not cast aside desire (chanda), one who does not lay down the burden, one who is diligent in wholesome dhammas, [thinking:] "When shall I fulfil the aggregate of virtue (sīlakkhandha) not yet fulfilled …, or fulfil the aggregate of concentration (samādhi), the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, the aggregate of the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision of liberation not yet fulfilled? When shall I fully understand the suffering (dukkha) not yet fully understood, or abandon the defilements (kilesa) not yet abandoned, or develop the path not yet developed, or realize the cessation not yet realized?" Whatever desire, effort, endeavor, exertion, vigor, and non-retreat there is in that regard, and the mindfulness and clear comprehension, the ardor, the striving, the determination, the application, the diligence in wholesome dhammas — thus "one should not be negligent in the teaching of Gotama." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"And having understood this Dhamma,
investigating, a bhikkhu should train, ever mindful;
having known quenching (nibbuti) as 'peace',
he should not be negligent in the teaching of Gotama."
