[816] **One should train for one's own Nibbāna (sikkhe nibbānamattano)**: "Should train" — there are three trainings (sikkhā): the training in higher virtue (adhisīlasikkhā), the training in higher mind (adhicittasikkhā), and the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā) … This is the training in higher wisdom.
"One's own Nibbāna": for the extinguishing (nibbāna) of one's own lust (rāga), for the extinguishing of hatred, for the extinguishing of delusion … for the stilling, the calming, the quieting, the extinguishing, the relinquishment, and the tranquilizing of all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā), one should train in the higher virtue, one should train in the higher mind, one should train in the higher wisdom. Adverting to these three trainings, one should train; knowing, one should train … realizing what should be realized, one should train; one should practice, practice well, and, having undertaken it, conduct oneself accordingly. Therefore it is said, "one should train for one's own Nibbāna." Hence the Blessed One said:
"The trainings are recited therein … … … … …
(whatever things are entanglements in the world) —
one should not be intent upon them;
having pierced through sensual pleasures in every way,
one should train for one's own Nibbāna."
