[856] **"What is past, dry that up" (yaṃ pubbe taṃ visosehi):** whatever defilements (kilesa) would arise with reference to past formations (saṅkhāra), dry up those defilements, dry them away, make them wither; abandon them, dispel them, make an end of them, bring them to non-existence — thus, in this way too, "what is past, dry that up." Or alternatively: whatever past kamma-formations (kammābhisaṅkhāra) there are whose results have not yet ripened (avipakkavipāka), dry up those kamma-formations, dry them away, make them wither, render them seedless; abandon them, dispel them, make an end of them, bring them to non-existence — thus, in this way too, "what is past, dry that up."
