[87] **"Itihaṃ," in "not boasting in virtues, [thinking] 'thus am I'"**: the word "itihaṃ" is a connective of words, a linking of words, a completion of words, a conjunction of syllables, a euphony of consonants; this word "itihaṃ" serves the sequential order of words.
**"Not boasting in virtues (sīla)"**: here someone is a boaster, a braggart. He boasts, he brags: "I am accomplished in virtue," or "accomplished in observances (vatta)," or "accomplished in virtue and observances"; or [he boasts] on account of birth, or of clan, or of being of a good family, or of beauty of complexion … or "I am an obtainer of the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception" — thus he boasts, he brags. [This bhikkhu] does not boast thus, does not brag thus: he is refrained, abstinent, fully abstinent from boasting, gone out from it, given it up, released from it, detached from it; he dwells with a mind (citta) made free of boundaries. Hence, "itihaṃ: not boasting in virtues, 'thus am I.'"
