[86] **"And a bhikkhu who is peaceful, whose self is quenched" (santo ca bhikkhu abhinibbutatto):** **"Peaceful" (santo):** Because of the pacification of lust (rāga), one is peaceful; because of the pacification of hatred, one is peaceful; because of the pacification of delusion, one is peaceful; because of the pacification, the stilling, the calming, the extinguishing, the quenching, the departure, and the tranquilizing of anger (kodha), resentment (upanāha), denigration (makkha), domineering (paḷāsa), envy (issā), avarice (macchariya), deceit (māyā), hypocrisy (sāṭheyya), obstinacy (thambha), presumption (sārambha), conceit (māna), excessive conceit (atimāna), intoxication (mada), heedlessness (pamāda), of all defilements (kilesa), all misconduct, all disquiet, all fevers, all torments, and all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā), one is peaceful, calmed, quenched, tranquilized — therefore, "peaceful." **"Bhikkhu":** Because of having broken seven things, one is a **bhikkhu**: personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) is broken; **doubt** (vicikicchā) is broken; adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa) is broken; lust is broken; hatred is broken; delusion is broken; conceit is broken. For him are broken those evil, unwholesome states that defile, that lead to renewed existence, that are accompanied by distress, that ripen in **suffering (dukkha)**, that lead to future **birth, aging, and death**. *"By a path made and traveled by himself ('Sabhiya,' said the Blessed One),* *one has gone to final quenching (parinibbāna), crossed over doubt;* *having given up both non-existence and existence,* *one has lived the holy life; one's renewed existence is destroyed."* Thus: "and a bhikkhu who is peaceful." **"Whose self is quenched" (abhinibbutatto):** Because lust has been quenched, because hatred has been quenched, because delusion has been quenched, one's self is quenched; because anger, resentment, denigration, domineering, envy, avarice, deceit, hypocrisy, obstinacy, presumption, conceit, excessive conceit, intoxication, heedlessness, all defilements, all misconduct, all disquiet, all fevers, all torments, and all unwholesome volitional formations have been quenched, one's self is quenched. Therefore: "and a bhikkhu who is peaceful, whose self is quenched."
