[880] **He neither takes up nor casts away (said the Blessed One):** *He neither takes up* means: he does not take up form (rūpa), does not take, does not cling to, does not seize, does not misapprehend, does not adhere to it; he does not take up feeling (vedanā), perception, volitional formations, consciousness, destination, rebirth, rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), existence, saṃsāra, the round (vaṭṭa) — he does not take, does not cling to, does not seize, does not misapprehend, does not adhere to them: thus, *he neither takes up.* *Nor casts away* means: he does not abandon form, does not dispel it, does not put an end to it, does not bring it to non-existence; he does not abandon feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness, destination, rebirth, rebirth-linking, existence, saṃsāra, the round — does not dispel them, does not put an end to them, does not bring them to non-existence: thus, *nor casts away.* **The Blessed One:** this is a term of reverence … this designation, namely "the Blessed One," is a designation verified [by realization]. Therefore the Blessed One said:
The sage (muni) does not speak of himself among equals, among inferiors,
or among superiors; peaceful, rid of avarice,
he neither takes up nor casts away — (said the Blessed One).
