[879] **"Peaceful, he is rid of avarice"** — "Peaceful": because lust (rāga) is pacified; because hatred, delusion … because all unwholesome volitional formations (sabbākusalābhisaṅkhārā) are pacified, stilled, calmed, quenched, extinguished, gone, and tranquilized, he is peaceful, appeased, calmed, extinguished, tranquilized — thus "peaceful is he." "Rid of avarice": there are five kinds of avarice (macchariya): avarice regarding dwellings … grasping — this is called avarice. He in whom this avarice is abandoned, cut off, calmed, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — he is called one rid of avarice, devoid of avarice, one who has given up avarice, vomited up avarice, been released from avarice, abandoned avarice, relinquished avarice — thus "peaceful, he is rid of avarice."
