[885] **Such a Teacher of lovely speech (evaṃ vagguvado satthā)** means: he is thus of lovely speech, of sweet speech, of endearing speech, of speech that goes to the heart, with a voice sweet as the cry of the karavīka bird. The voice that issues from the mouth of that Blessed One is endowed with eight factors: it is fluent, intelligible, sweet, pleasant to hear, compact, not diffuse, deep, and resonant. And when the Blessed One informs an assembly with his voice, that voice does not travel beyond the assembly. The Blessed One has the voice of Brahmā; he speaks like the karavīka bird — thus he is "of lovely speech."
**Teacher (satthā):** the Blessed One is a caravan leader (satthavāha). Just as a caravan leader brings caravans across the wilderness — brings them across the wilderness of robbers, brings them across the wilderness of wild beasts, brings them across the wilderness of famine, brings them across the waterless wilderness — brings them across, brings them over, brings them through, brings them beyond, and conveys them to a region of safety; even so the Blessed One, the caravan leader, brings beings across the wilderness — brings them across the wilderness of birth, brings them across the wilderness of aging, brings them across the wilderness of sickness, brings them across the wilderness of death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; brings them across the wilderness of lust, brings them across the wilderness of hatred, delusion, conceit, views, defilements, and misconduct; brings them across the thicket of lust, brings them across the thicket of hatred, delusion, conceit, and views, brings them across the thicket of defilements — brings them across, brings them over, brings them through, brings them beyond, and conveys them to Nibbāna, the deathless, the place of safety. Thus too the Blessed One is a caravan leader.
Or else: the Blessed One is a leader, a guide, one who leads onward, one who makes understood, one who makes reflect, one who makes them behold, one who inspires confidence — thus too the Blessed One is a caravan leader.
Or else: the Blessed One is the arouser of the unarisen path (magga), the generator of the ungenerated path, the declarer of the undeclared path; he is the knower of the path, the discoverer of the path, the one skilled in the path. And his disciples now dwell following that path, coming to possess it afterwards — thus too the Blessed One is a caravan leader. Hence: "such a Teacher of lovely speech."
