[955] **He should overcome the four things that occasion lamentation** (caturo sahetha paridevadhamme): he should overcome,⁴ vanquish, overwhelm, exhaust, and crush the four things that are occasions for lamentation (parideva). Hence, "he should overcome the four things that occasion lamentation." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Putting wisdom (paññā) to the fore, possessed of beautiful rapture (pīti),
he should suppress those dangers (parissayā);
he should overcome discontent (arati) on his secluded bed;
he should overcome the four things that occasion lamentation.
