[96] **Entrenchments in views are indeed not easily transcended** (diṭṭhīnivesā na hi svātivattā): As to **entrenchments in views** — the misapprehension through adherence (abhinivesa-parāmāsa), "The world is eternal; this alone is true, anything else is vain," is an entrenchment in view (diṭṭhinivesana). "The world is not eternal; the world is finite; the world is infinite; the soul (jīva) and the body are the same; the soul is one thing, the body another; the Tathāgata exists after death; the Tathāgata does not exist after death; the Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death; the Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death — this alone is true, anything else is vain": such misapprehension through adherence is an entrenchment in view. Hence "entrenchments in views."
As to **are indeed not easily transcended**: they are hard to transcend, hard to cross over, hard to cross beyond, hard to surmount, hard to pass beyond. Therefore it is said, "entrenchments in views are indeed not easily transcended."
