[970] **"And not restless of foot" (na ca pādalolo):** How is one restless of foot? Here someone is restless of foot, possessed of restlessness of foot: from monastery to monastery … he is given to long wandering, to unsettled wandering … In this way too one is restless of foot. Or else, a bhikkhu, even within the monastery precinct, is restless of foot, possessed of restlessness of foot: not on account of any purpose, not on account of any reason, agitated, with an unquieted mind (citta), he goes from cell-compound to cell-compound … he talks talk of existence in this or that state. In this way too one is restless of foot. "And not restless of foot": one should abandon restlessness of foot, dispel it, make an end of it, and bring it to non-existence; one should be aloof from restlessness of foot, abstaining, refraining, and desisting from it, gone forth from it, given it up, released and detached from it; one should dwell with a mind made free of boundaries; one should delight in seclusion (paṭisallāna), take delight in seclusion, be intent upon internal serenity of mind, not neglecting meditation (jhāna), endowed with insight (vipassanā), a cultivator of empty dwellings, a meditator, delighting in meditation, intent upon oneness of mind, giving weight to his own goal — therefore, "with eyes downcast, and not restless of foot."
