Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Mahāniddesa · Vol. 29 · Section 971

[971] **Devoted to jhāna, much wakeful (jhānānuyutto bahujāgarassa):** **Devoted to jhāna (jhānānuyutto):** one is devoted to jhāna for two reasons: one is engaged, applied, intent, and fully engaged for the arising of the first jhāna that has not yet arisen; or one is engaged, applied, intent, and fully engaged for the arising of the second jhāna, the third jhāna, or the fourth jhāna that has not yet arisen — thus, too, one is devoted to jhāna. Or else, one pursues, develops, and makes much of the first jhāna that has arisen; or one pursues, develops, and makes much of the second jhāna, the third jhāna, or the fourth jhāna that has arisen — thus, too, one is devoted to jhāna. **Much wakeful (bahujāgarassa):** here a bhikkhu, during the day, purifies the mind (citta) of obstructive states by walking meditation and by sitting; in the first watch of the night he purifies the mind of obstructive states by walking meditation and by sitting; in the middle watch of the night he lies down on his right side in the lion's posture, placing one foot upon the other, possessed of mindfulness and clearly comprehending, having attended to the perception of rising; in the last watch of the night, having risen, he purifies the mind of obstructive states by walking meditation and by sitting. Hence: "devoted to jhāna, much wakeful."
