[980] **Then further, the five dusts in the world** (athāparaṃ pañca rajāni loke): **Then** (atha) — this is a verbal connective, a linkage of words, a word-completion, a combination of syllables, a smoothness of phrasing, a sequential ordering of words: such is the word "atha."
**The five dusts** (pañca rajāni): lust (rāga) for forms, lust for sounds, lust for odors, lust for tastes, lust for tangibles. Or else:
Lust is "dust" (rajo), yet it is not dust-particles (reṇu) that are so called;
"dust" — this is a designation for lust.
Having abandoned this dust, the wise
dwell in the teaching of the one who is free from dust.
Hatred is "dust," yet it is not dust-particles that are so called;
"dust" — this is a designation for hatred.
Having abandoned this dust, the wise
dwell in the teaching of the one who is free from dust.
Delusion is "dust," yet it is not dust-particles that are so called;
"dust" — this is a designation for delusion.
Having abandoned this dust, the wise
dwell in the teaching of the one who is free from dust.
**In the world** (loke): in the world of the states of loss (apāyaloka), in the world of humans, in the world of devas, in the world of the aggregates (khandha), in the world of the elements (dhātu), in the world of the sense bases (āyatana) — thus, "then further, the five dusts in the world."
