[987] **"Become unified (ekodibhūta), he should dispel the darkness," said the Blessed One.** "Ekodi": one whose mind (citta) is one-pointed, whose mind is unscattered, whose mentality is undistracted — thus "become unified." **"He should dispel the darkness (vihane tamaṃ so)"**: that one should strike down, dispel, abandon, remove, bring to an end, and reduce to non-existence the darkness of lust (rāga), the darkness of hatred (dosa), the darkness of delusion (moha), the darkness of conceit (māna), the darkness of views (diṭṭhi), the darkness of the defilements (kilesa), the darkness of misconduct (duccarita) — which makes for blindness, makes for eyelessness, makes for absence of knowledge (ñāṇa), causes the cessation of wisdom, sides with vexation, and does not conduce to Nibbāna. **"Bhagavā"** is a term of reverence. Moreover: he has broken lust — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken hatred — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken delusion — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken conceit — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken views — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken the thorn — thus he is Bhagavā. He has broken the defilements — thus he is Bhagavā. He apportioned, distributed, and analyzed in detail¹ the jewel of the Dhamma — thus he is Bhagavā. He is the maker of an end of existences — thus he is Bhagavā. He is developed in body — thus he is Bhagavā. He is developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in wisdom — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One resorted to (bhaji) remote lodgings in forests and woodland thickets, of little sound, of little noise, free from the breath of people, affording privacy for humans, suitable for retreat — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker (bhāgī) of robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the taste of the goal, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation, of the higher virtue, the higher mind, the higher wisdom — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the four jhānas, the four boundless states, the four formless attainments — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the eight liberations, the eight bases of mastery, the nine attainments of successive dwellings — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the ten developments of perception, the ten kasiṇa attainments, the concentration (samādhi) of mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati), and the attainment of foulness (asubha) — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the four right exertions, the four bases of spiritual power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), and the noble eightfold path — thus he is Bhagavā. Or: the Blessed One is a partaker of the ten Tathāgata powers, the four intrepidities, the four analytic insights, the six superknowledges, and the six Buddha-qualities — thus he is Bhagavā. This name "Bhagavā" was not made by a mother, not made by a father, not made by a brother, not made by a sister, not made by friends and colleagues, not made by kinsmen and blood-relations, not made by ascetics and brahmins, not made by deities: this name of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, pertains to the culmination of liberation (vimokkhantika), a designation arising from realization (sacchikā paññatti) together with the attainment of the knowledge of omniscience at the foot of the Bodhi tree — namely, "Bhagavā." Thus: "Become unified, he should dispel the darkness," said the Blessed One. Therefore the Blessed One said: Having removed desire (chanda) for these things, a bhikkhu, mindful, with mind well liberated, rightly examining the Dhamma at the proper time, become unified, he should dispel the darkness, said the Blessed One. The Sixteenth: the Exposition of the Sāriputta Sutta is concluded. The sixteen Sutta Expositions in the Aṭṭhakavagga² are completed. _______________ ¹ Po. and Ma. editions read *pavibhaji*.
