[175] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time a certain brahmin who had completed his royal service, thinking, "I will ask for that same post of service again," bathed his head and set out for the royal court, passing close by the bhikkhunīs' quarters. A certain bhikkhunī (bhikkhunī), having relieved herself into a receptacle and emptying it out over the wall, dumped it upon that brahmin's head. Then that brahmin complained, criticized, and spread it about: "These shaven-headed harlots are no true female ascetics! How could they dump a pot of dung upon my head? I shall burn down their quarters!" And taking a firebrand, he entered the quarters. A certain lay follower (upāsaka), coming out of the quarters, saw that brahmin entering the quarters carrying a firebrand; and seeing him, he said to that brahmin: "Why, sir, are you entering the quarters carrying a firebrand?"
"Sir, these shaven-headed harlots dumped a pot of dung upon my head; I shall burn down their quarters."
"Go, sir — this is an auspicious omen; you will receive a thousand, and that post of service."
Then that brahmin bathed his head, went to the royal court, and received a thousand and that post of service. Then that lay follower entered the quarters, informed the bhikkhunīs of this matter, and berated them.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhunīs discard excrement over a wall?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that bhikkhunīs discard excrement over a wall?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhunīs discard excrement over a wall? This, bhikkhus, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Should any bhikkhunī throw out, or have thrown out, excrement or urine or rubbish or food scraps over a wall or over an enclosure, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya).'"
