[182] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, at the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now at that time there was a hilltop festival (giraggasamajja) in Rājagaha. The bhikkhunīs of the group of six (chabbaggiyā) went to see the hilltop festival. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs go to see dancing, singing, and instrumental music, just like women householders who enjoy sensual pleasures?"
Bhikkhunīs heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … they criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six go to see dancing, singing, and instrumental music?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunīs of the group of six go to see dancing, singing, and instrumental music?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six go to see dancing, singing, and instrumental music? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī go to see dancing, or singing, or instrumental music, there is an offense of pācittiya."
