Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga · Vol. 3 · Section 2

[2] **"Whatever" (yā pana):** whoever she may be — of whatever sort, of whatever occupation, of whatever birth, of whatever name, of whatever clan, of whatever virtue, of whatever manner of dwelling, of whatever resort — whether an elder, or newly ordained, or of middle standing: this is called "whatever." **"Bhikkhunī":** she is a bhikkhunī because she is one who begs; a bhikkhunī because she has undertaken the practice of going about for alms; a bhikkhunī because she wears the patched cloth; a bhikkhunī by designation; a bhikkhunī by her acknowledgment; a bhikkhunī [by the words] "come, bhikkhunī"; a bhikkhunī because she is ordained by the going to the three refuges; a bhikkhunī because she is auspicious; a bhikkhunī because she possesses the essence; a bhikkhunī as a trainee; a bhikkhunī as one beyond training; a bhikkhunī because she has been ordained by both Saṅghas in unity, through a formal act consisting of a motion and three proclamations (ñatticatuttha kamma), unshakeable and fit to stand. Herein, the bhikkhunī who has been ordained by both Saṅghas in unity, through a formal act consisting of a motion and three proclamations, unshakeable and fit to stand — this is the bhikkhunī intended in this meaning. **"Filled with desire" (avassutā)** means: lustful, full of longing, with a mind bound [by attachment]. **"Filled with desire" (avassuto)** [said of the man] means: lustful, full of longing, with a mind bound. **"Male person" (purisapuggala):** a human male — not a yakkha, not a peta, not an animal — one who is intelligent, capable of engaging in bodily contact. **"Below the collarbone":** beneath the collarbone. **"Above the knee":** above the circle of the knee. **"Stroking":** mere stroking. **"Rubbing":** moving [the hand] here and there. **"Grasping":** mere grasping. **"Touching":** mere touching. **"Or should consent to pressing":** having taken hold of a limb, she consents to the squeezing. **"She also":** this is said with reference to the previous ones. **"Is pārājikā (defeated)":** just as a man whose head has been cut off is incapable of living by means of that bodily connection, even so a bhikkhunī who is filled with desire, consenting to the stroking, or rubbing, or grasping, or touching, or pressing of a male person filled with desire, below the collarbone and above the knee, is no ascetic, no daughter of the Sakyan; therefore it is said, "she is pārājikā." **"Excluded from communion" (asaṃvāsā):** communion (saṃvāsa) means a single formal act, a single recitation, the state of equal training — this is called communion. That [communion] does not exist together with her; therefore it is said, "excluded from communion."
