[427] Bhikkhus heard some of the women uttering imprecations and some of the women uttering blessings. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes, contented … they criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How indeed can the Venerable Udāyi engage in acting as a go-between (sañcaritta)?" Then those bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. Then the Blessed One, on that occasion and in that connection, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened, questioned the Venerable Udāyi: "Is it true, as they say, Udāyi, that you engage in acting as a go-between?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "It is unbecoming, foolish man, unsuitable, improper, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How indeed could you, foolish man, engage in acting as a go-between? This, foolish man, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence …" "And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'Whatever bhikkhu should engage in acting as a go-between—conveying a man's intention to a woman, or a woman's intention to a man—whether for the state of being a wife or for the state of being a paramour, it is an offense entailing saṅghādisesa.'" And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
