[43] **"Whatever" (yo pana):** whoever, of whatever sort … .
**"Bhikkhu":** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense as "bhikkhu."
**"Not a relative" (aññātikā)** means: unconnected on the mother's side or on the father's side back through seven generations of paternal forebears.
**"Bhikkhunī"** means: one fully ordained in both Saṅghas.
**"Old robe" (purāṇacīvara)** means: one worn even once as a lower garment, or worn even once as an upper garment.
**"Wash it":** there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). When it has been washed, it becomes subject to relinquishment (nissaggiya).
**"Dye it":** he commands her — an offense of wrong-doing. When it has been dyed, it becomes subject to relinquishment.
**"Beat it":** he commands her — an offense of wrong-doing. When even a single blow with the hand or a blow with a mallet has been given, it becomes subject to relinquishment; it is to be relinquished to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to an individual.
"And thus, bhikkhus, is it to be relinquished: … 'Venerable sirs, this old robe of mine, which I had washed by a bhikkhunī who is not a relative, is subject to relinquishment; I relinquish it to the Saṅgha.' … 'should give …' … 'they should give …' … 'I give this to the venerable one.'"
