[4] That bhikkhu should approach the Saṅgha, arrange his upper robe (uttarāsaṅga) over one shoulder, pay homage at the feet of the senior bhikkhus, sit down squatting on his heels, raise his joined palms, and should be made to say thus:
"Venerable sirs, this robe of mine, which has been kept beyond ten days, is subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya). I forfeit it to the Saṅgha."
Having forfeited it, the offence (āpatti) should be confessed. The offence should be acknowledged by an experienced, capable bhikkhu, and the forfeited robe should be given back: [1]
"Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. This robe of the bhikkhu named so-and-so, being subject to forfeiture, has been forfeited to the Saṅgha. If it is the proper time for the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha give this robe back to the bhikkhu named so-and-so."

1. The Yu. edition reads "vikappanupagapacchimaṃ."
2. In the phrase "nissaggiyaṃ hoti," the word "hoti" may be a superfluous reading, since it does not occur in the rule text (sutta). Otherwise the rule would be deficient — it would then have to read "evaṃ nissaggiyaṃ hoti pācittiyaṃ." This should be accepted only after due consideration.]
