[42] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the former wife (purāṇadutiyikā) of the Venerable Udāyi had gone forth among the bhikkhunīs. That bhikkhunī came frequently into the presence of the Venerable Udāyi, and the Venerable Udāyi too went frequently into the presence of that bhikkhunī. Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi took his meal in the presence of that bhikkhunī.
Then the Venerable Udāyi, having dressed in the morning and taking his bowl and robe, approached that bhikkhunī; having approached, he sat down on a seat, exposing his genitals in front of that bhikkhunī. That bhikkhunī too sat down on a seat, exposing her genitals in front of the Venerable Udāyi. Then the Venerable Udāyi, filled with lust, gazed upon that bhikkhunī's genitals, and semen was emitted from his genitals. Then the Venerable Udāyi said this to that bhikkhunī: "Go, sister, bring water; I shall wash my inner robe (antaravāsaka)."
"Give it here, noble sir; I myself shall wash it." Then that bhikkhunī took one portion of that semen of his with her mouth and inserted one portion into her genitals. By that she conceived.
The bhikkhunīs said thus: "This bhikkhunī is not one who lives the holy life; this one is pregnant."
"Noble ladies, it is not that I do not live the holy life." Then that bhikkhunī informed the bhikkhunīs of this matter.
The bhikkhunīs looked down upon it, criticized it, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the noble Udāyi have a bhikkhunī wash a used robe?" Then those bhikkhunīs informed the bhikkhus of this matter.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … looked down upon it, criticized it, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the Venerable Udāyi have a bhikkhunī wash a used robe?" Then those bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter.
Then the Blessed One … questioned the Venerable Udāyi: "Is it true, Udāyi, as they say, that you had a bhikkhunī wash a used robe?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
"Is she a relative of yours, Udāyi, or not a relative?"
"Not a relative, Blessed One."
"One who is not a relative, foolish man, does not know what is proper or improper, what is pleasing or displeasing, with regard to a woman who is not a relative. How then, foolish man, could you have a bhikkhunī who is not a relative wash a used robe? This, foolish man, is neither for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should have a bhikkhunī who is not a relative wash, or dye, or beat a used robe, this entails relinquishment with expiation (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
