[426] Then that courtesan (gaṇakī) complained, criticized, and denounced him: "May Master Udāyi be just as wretched; may Master Udāyi be just as miserable; may Master Udāyi likewise find no happiness — just as my girl, wretched and miserable, finds no happiness because of a bad mother-in-law, a bad father-in-law, and a bad husband."
That girl too complained, criticized, and denounced him: "May Master Udāyi be just as wretched; may Master Udāyi be just as miserable; may Master Udāyi likewise find no happiness — just as I, wretched and miserable, find no happiness because of a bad mother-in-law, a bad father-in-law, and a bad husband."
Other women as well, being dissatisfied with their mothers-in-law, their fathers-in-law, or their husbands, cursed him thus: "May Master Udāyi be just as wretched; may Master Udāyi be just as miserable; may Master Udāyi likewise find no happiness — just as we, wretched and miserable, find no happiness because of bad mothers-in-law, bad fathers-in-law, and bad husbands."
But those women who were satisfied with their mothers-in-law, their fathers-in-law, or their husbands invoked blessings thus: "May Master Udāyi be just as happy; may Master Udāyi be just as well provided for; may Master Udāyi likewise attain happiness — just as we, happy and well provided for, attain happiness because of good mothers-in-law, good fathers-in-law, and good husbands."
