[425] Then that girl sent a messenger to her mother, saying: "I am wretched and miserable; I find no happiness. For a month only did they treat me as a daughter-in-law; from then on they treat me as a slave-woman. Let my mother come and take me away."
Then that courtesan approached those disciples of the Ājīvakas; having approached, she said this to those disciples of the Ājīvakas: "Sirs, do not treat this girl as a slave-woman; treat this girl as a daughter-in-law." They said this: "We have no exchange of food with you; our exchange of food was with the ascetic. Go; we do not know you." Then that courtesan, rebuffed by those disciples of the Ājīvakas, returned again to Sāvatthī.
A second time that girl sent a messenger to her mother, saying: "I am wretched and miserable; I find no happiness. For a month only did they treat me as a daughter-in-law; from then on they treat me as a slave-woman. Let my mother come and take me away." Then that courtesan approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, she said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "It seems, venerable sir, that girl is wretched and miserable; she finds no happiness. For a month only did they treat her as a daughter-in-law; from then on they treat her as a slave-woman. May you say, venerable sir: 'Sirs, do not treat this girl as a slave-woman; treat this girl as a daughter-in-law.'"
Then the Venerable Udāyi approached those disciples of the Ājīvakas; having approached, he said this to those disciples of the Ājīvakas: "Sirs, do not treat this girl as a slave-woman; treat this girl as a daughter-in-law." They said this: "We have no exchange of food with you; our exchange of food was with the courtesan. An ascetic should be one who does not meddle; an ascetic should be a good ascetic. Go; we do not know you." Then the Venerable Udāyi, rebuffed by those disciples of the Ājīvakas, returned again to Sāvatthī.
A third time that girl sent a messenger to her mother, saying: "I am wretched and miserable; I find no happiness. For a month only did they treat me as a daughter-in-law; from then on they treat me as a slave-woman. Let my mother come and take me away." A second time that courtesan approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, she said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "It seems, venerable sir, that girl is wretched and miserable; she finds no happiness. For a month only did they treat her as a daughter-in-law; from then on they treat her as a slave-woman. May you say, venerable sir: 'Sirs, do not treat this girl as a slave-woman; treat this girl as a daughter-in-law.'" [He replied:] "The first time I was rebuffed by those disciples of the Ājīvakas. Go; I shall not go."
