[424] Now at that time a certain former courtesan (purāṇagaṇikā) had a daughter who was beautiful, fair to behold, and graceful. Followers of the Ājīvakas from an outlying village came and said to that courtesan: "Lady, give this girl to our boy."
She said: "Masters, I do not know you — who these people are, or whose they are; moreover, this is my only daughter, and she would have to go to a distant village. I will not give her."
People said to those followers of the Ājīvakas: "Masters, for what purpose have you come?"
"Here, masters, we asked the courtesan named so-and-so for her daughter for our boy. She said: 'Masters, I do not know you — who these people are, or whose they are; moreover, this is my only daughter, and she would have to go to a distant village. I will not give her.'"
"Why, masters, did you ask that courtesan for her daughter? Should not master Udāyi be spoken to? Master Udāyi will have her given."
Then those followers of the Ājīvakas approached the venerable Udāyi, and having approached, they said to the venerable Udāyi: "Here, venerable sir, we asked the courtesan named so-and-so for her daughter for our boy. She said: 'Masters, I do not know you — who these people are, or whose they are; moreover, this is my only daughter, and she would have to go to a distant village. I will not give her.' It would be good, venerable sir, if the master would have that courtesan give her daughter for our boy."
Then the venerable Udāyi approached that courtesan, and having approached, he said to that courtesan: "Why do you not give your daughter to these people?"
"Venerable sir, I do not know these people — who they are, or whose they are; moreover, this is my only daughter, and she would have to go to a distant village. I will not give her."
"Give her to these people; I know them."
"If, venerable sir, the master knows them, I will give her."
Then that courtesan gave her daughter to those followers of the Ājīvakas. Then those followers of the Ājīvakas, having taken that girl away, for one month only treated her with the treatment due a daughter-in-law; but from then onward they treat her with the treatment of a slave.
