[423] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the venerable Udāyi was a frequenter of families (kulūpaka) in Sāvatthī; he visited many families. Wherever he saw a boy without a wife or a girl without a husband, he would speak in praise of the girl in the presence of the boy's mother and father, saying: "The girl of such-and-such a family is beautiful, fair to behold, lovely, wise, competent, intelligent, skilled, and diligent; that girl is suitable for this boy." They would say: "Venerable sir, these people do not know us — who we are or whose we are. If, venerable sir, the master would have her given, we would bring that girl for this boy."
He would speak in praise of the boy in the presence of the girl's mother and father, saying: "The boy of such-and-such a family is handsome, fair to behold, lovely, wise, competent, intelligent, skilled, and diligent; that boy is suitable for this girl." They would say: "Venerable sir, these people do not know us — who we are or whose we are — and it would be an embarrassment, as it were, for the girl's side to raise the matter. If, venerable sir, the master would have them make the request, we would give this girl to that boy."
In this very way he arranged marriages in which brides were brought in (āvāha), arranged marriages in which brides were given out (vivāha), and had betrothals (vāreyya) carried out.
