[334] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Now at that time the Venerable Kappitaka, the preceptor of the Venerable Upāli, was dwelling in a charnel ground. Now at that time the seniormost bhikkhunī of the group-of-six bhikkhunīs had died. The group-of-six bhikkhunīs, having carried that bhikkhunī out and cremated her not far from the Venerable Kappitaka's dwelling, built a stūpa, and going to that stūpa they wept there. Then the Venerable Kappitaka, vexed by that noise, demolished that stūpa and scattered it about. The group-of-six bhikkhunīs conspired together, saying: "By this Kappitaka our lady's stūpa has been destroyed. Come, let us kill him." A certain bhikkhunī reported this matter to the Venerable Upāli. The Venerable Upāli reported this matter to the Venerable Kappitaka. Then the Venerable Kappitaka, having left his dwelling, stayed in hiding.
Then the group-of-six bhikkhunīs approached the Venerable Kappitaka's dwelling; having approached, they had the Venerable Kappitaka's dwelling buried under stones and clods of earth, and thinking, "Kappitaka is dead," they departed. Then the Venerable Kappitaka, when that night had passed, having dressed in the morning and taken his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. The group-of-six bhikkhunīs saw the Venerable Kappitaka walking for alms; having seen him, they said this: "This Kappitaka is alive! Who, then, has divulged our plan?" The group-of-six bhikkhunīs heard: "It is said that our plan was divulged by master Upāli." They abused the Venerable Upāli: "How indeed can this barber, this scrubber of filth, this low-born fellow, divulge our plan?"
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … They criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How indeed can the group-of-six bhikkhunīs abuse master Upāli?" … "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhunīs are abusing Upāli?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can the group-of-six bhikkhunīs abuse Upāli? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …" "And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule: Whatever bhikkhunī should abuse or revile a bhikkhu, there is an offence of pācittiya."
