[57] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā was beautiful, lovely to behold, and graceful. People, having seen the bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā in the refectory, being lustful (avassuta), gave the finest foods to the bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā. The bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā, being scrupulous, did not accept them. The bhikkhunī seated immediately next said this to the bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā: "Why, noble lady, do you not accept?"
"He is lustful, noble lady."
"But are you lustful, noble lady?"
"I am not lustful, noble lady."
"What can that man do to you, noble lady, whether he is lustful or not lustful, so long as you are not lustful? Come, noble lady, whatever hard food or soft food that man gives you, receive it with your own hand and chew it or eat it."
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … They criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How indeed can a bhikkhunī speak thus: 'What can that man do to you, noble lady, whether he is lustful or not lustful, so long as you are not lustful? Come, noble lady, whatever hard food or soft food that man gives you, receive it with your own hand and chew it or eat it'?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhunī speaks thus: 'What can that man do to you, noble lady, whether he is lustful or not lustful, so long as you are not lustful? Come, noble lady, whatever hard food or soft food that man gives you, receive it with your own hand and chew it or eat it'?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can a bhikkhunī speak thus: 'What can that man do to you, noble lady, whether he is lustful or not lustful, so long as you are not lustful? Come, noble lady, whatever hard food or soft food that man gives you, receive it with your own hand and chew it or eat it'? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhunī should speak thus: 'What can that man do to you, noble lady, whether he is lustful or not lustful, so long as you are not lustful? Come, noble lady, whatever hard food or soft food that man gives you, receive it with your own hand and chew it or eat it' — this bhikkhunī too has fallen into an act that is an offense on the first instance (paṭhamāpattika), entailing sending away (nissāraṇīya), a saṅghādisesa."
