Saṅghādisesasikkhābada

Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga · Vol. 3 · Section 86

[86] **"Whatever" (yā panā):** whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhunī":** … this is the bhikkhunī intended in this sense. **"Should speak thus" (evaṃ vadeyya):** "Live in company, ladies; do not live separately. There are in the Saṅgha other bhikkhunīs too of such conduct, of such report, of such repute (evaṃsilokā), harassers of the Bhikkhunī Saṅgha, concealers of one another's faults; to them the Saṅgha says nothing. It is only to you that the Saṅgha—**"out of contempt" (uññāya):** with disdain; **"out of scorn" (paribhavena):** the state of being held in scorn¹; **"out of impatience" (akkhantiyā):** with anger; **"out of gossip" (vebhassā):** the making of gossip; **"out of weakness" (dubbalyā):** the state of having no faction—speaks thus: 'The sisters indeed live in company, of bad conduct, of bad report, of bad repute, harassers of the Bhikkhunī Saṅgha, concealers of one another's faults. Separate yourselves, ladies; the Saṅgha praises only seclusion for the sisters.'" **"That bhikkhunī":** the bhikkhunī who speaks in that way. **"By the bhikkhunīs":** by other bhikkhunīs. Those who see and those who hear—by them she should be told: "Lady, do not speak thus: 'Live in company, ladies; do not live separately … Separate yourselves, ladies; the Saṅgha praises only seclusion for the sisters.'" She should be told a second time; she should be told a third time. If she relinquishes it, that is good; if she does not relinquish it, there is an offense of wrong conduct (dukkaṭa). If, having heard, they do not speak, there is an offense of dukkaṭa. That bhikkhunī, having been drawn even into the midst of the Saṅgha, should be told: "Lady, do not speak thus: 'Live in company, ladies; do not live separately … Separate yourselves, ladies; the Saṅgha praises only seclusion for the sisters.'" She should be told a second time; she should be told a third time. If she relinquishes it, that is good; if she does not relinquish it, there is an offense of dukkaṭa. ¹ [Variant: M., Yu. read *pāribhabyatā*.]
