Puṇṇakamāṇavakapañhānidadesa

[131] "They crossed over birth and aging, dear sir (mārisa)": they crossed over (atāriṃsu), crossed up beyond, crossed all the way through, transcended, and passed beyond birth, aging, death (jāti, jarā, maraṇa). "Mārisa": this is a term of affection (piyavacana), a term of respect (garuvacana); this word "mārisa" is a designation imbued with respect and deference. Hence: "They crossed over birth and aging, dear sir."
