[157] **"Whoever indeed, unknowing, creates acquisition (upadhi)"** (yo ve avidvā upadhiṃ karoti):
**"Whoever" (yo):** whoever he may be — of whatever sort, however engaged, however disposed, of whatever character, whatever station he has reached, endowed with whatever qualities — whether a khattiya, a brahmin, a vessa, a sudda, a householder or one gone forth, a deva or a human being.
**"Unknowing" (avidvā):** unknowing, gone into ignorance (avijjā), without knowledge (ñāṇa), lacking clear understanding, of poor wisdom.
**"Creates acquisition" (upadhiṃ karoti):** he creates the acquisition of craving (taṇhā); he creates the acquisition of views; he creates the acquisition of defilements; he creates the acquisition of kamma; he creates the acquisition of misconduct; he creates the acquisition of nutriment; he creates the acquisition of repulsion; he makes the four clung-to elements (dhātu) into acquisitions; he makes the six internal sense bases (āyatana) into acquisitions; he makes the six classes of consciousness into acquisitions — he generates them, produces them, brings them into being. Hence: "unknowing, he creates acquisition."
