[159] **Therefore, understanding, one should not create acquisitions (upadhi).**
**Therefore (tasmā):** therefore, for that reason, from that cause, owing to that condition, from that source — seeing this danger (ādīnava) in acquisitions; thus, "therefore."
**Understanding (pajānaṃ):** understanding, knowing, discerning, recognizing, penetrating. Understanding, knowing, discerning, recognizing, penetrating that "all conditioned things (saṅkhārā) are impermanent"; [understanding, knowing, discerning, recognizing, penetrating] that "all conditioned things are suffering (dukkha)," that "all dhammas are not-self (anattā)" … understanding, knowing, discerning, recognizing, penetrating that "whatever is of a nature to originate, all that is of a nature to cease."
**One should not create acquisitions (upadhiṃ na kayirā):** one should not create the acquisition that is craving (taṇhā); one should not create the acquisition that is views; one should not create the acquisition that is defilements; one should not create the acquisition that is kamma; one should not create the acquisition that is misconduct; one should not create the acquisition that is nutriment; one should not create the acquisition that is repulsion; one should not create as acquisitions the four clung-to elements (dhātu); one should not create as acquisitions the six internal sense bases (āyatana) — one should not generate them, should not produce them, should not bring them into being. Thus, "therefore, understanding, one should not create acquisitions."
