[173] **Mahesī dhammamuttamaṃ** ("The great seer, the supreme Dhamma"): "Great seer (mahesī)" — in what sense is he a great seer? The Blessed One sought, searched for, and sought after the great aggregate of virtue — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the great aggregate of concentration (samādhi), the great aggregate of wisdom, the great aggregate of liberation, the great aggregate of the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision of liberation — thus he is a great seer. Or: he sought, searched for, and sought after the shattering of the great mass of darkness — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the breaking up of the great perversion (vipallāsa) — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the drawing out of the great dart of craving (taṇhā) — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the piercing through of the great tangle of views — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the casting down of the great banner of conceit — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the stilling of the great volitional formation (abhisaṅkhāra) — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the crossing over of the great flood (ogha) — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the laying down of the great burden — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the cutting off of the great round of saṃsāra — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the quenching of the great burning — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the allaying of the great fever — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the raising up of the great banner of the Dhamma — thus he is a great seer. He sought, searched for, and sought after the great establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the great right exertions, the great bases for success, the great faculties, the great powers, the great factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), the great noble eightfold path (magga), and the great ultimate goal, the deathless Nibbāna — thus he is a great seer. Or: he is sought, searched for, and sought after by beings of great power, [who ask]: "Where is the Buddha? Where is the Blessed One? Where is the god of gods? Where is the bull of men?" — thus he is a great seer. **Dhammamuttaman ti** ("the supreme Dhamma"): "the supreme Dhamma" is said to be the deathless Nibbāna — that which is the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all acquisitions, the destruction of craving, dispassion (virāga), cessation, Nibbāna. **Uttaman ti**: the foremost, the best, the most distinguished, the chief, the supreme, the most excellent Dhamma — thus, "the great seer, the supreme Dhamma."
