Mettagūmāṇavakapañhāniddesa

Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 179

[179] **"Having dispelled delight and attachment in these, consciousness would not remain in existence."** **"In these" (etesu):** in these things that have been declared, taught, made known, established, disclosed, analyzed, made plain, and revealed. **Delight (nandi)** is a term for craving (taṇhā): that lust, that passion … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. **"Attachment" (nivesana):** there are two attachments — attachment through craving (taṇhā) and attachment through views (diṭṭhi). What is attachment through craving? To the extent that [things are] demarcated by way of craving … this is attachment through craving. What is attachment through views? Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) with its twenty grounds … this is attachment through views. **"Having dispelled consciousness" (panujja viññāṇaṃ):** consciousness accompanied by the formation of merit (puññābhisaṅkhāra), consciousness accompanied by the formation of demerit (apuññābhisaṅkhāra), consciousness accompanied by the formation of the imperturbable (āneñjābhisaṅkhāra). Dispel, thrust away, push out, drive out, abandon, relinquish, remove, put an end to, and bring to non-existence delight, attachment, and consciousness accompanied by [volitional] formation in these things — thus, "having dispelled delight and attachment in these — consciousness." **"Would not remain in existence" (bhave na tiṭṭhe):** "Existence" — there are two existences: kamma-existence (kammabhava) and renewed existence with rebirth-linking (paṭisandhiko punabbhavo). What is kamma-existence? The formation of merit, the formation of demerit, the formation of the imperturbable — this is kamma-existence. What is renewed existence with rebirth-linking? Form, feeling (vedanā), perception, volitional formations, and consciousness at rebirth-linking — this is renewed existence with rebirth-linking. **"Would not remain in existence":** abandoning, removing, putting an end to, and bringing to non-existence delight, attachment, consciousness accompanied by [volitional] formation, kamma-existence, and renewed existence with rebirth-linking, one would not remain in kamma-existence, would not remain, would not persist in renewed existence with rebirth-linking — thus, "having dispelled consciousness, one would not remain in existence." Therefore the Blessed One said: > "Whatever you clearly comprehend (Mettagū," said the Blessed One,) > above, below, across, and in the middle — > having dispelled delight and attachment in these, > consciousness would not remain in existence."
