[178] **Above, below, and across in the middle (uddhaṃ adho tiriyañcāpi majjhe):** "Above" (uddhaṃ) is said to be the future; "below" (adho) is the past; "across in the middle" (tiriyañcāpi majjhe) is the present. "Above" is said to be the deva world; "below" is the hell world; "across in the middle" is the human world. "Above" is wholesome dhammas; "below" is unwholesome dhammas; "across in the middle" is indeterminate (abyākata) dhammas. "Above" is the formless element (arūpadhātu); "below" is the sensuality element (kāmadhātu); "across in the middle" is the form element (rūpadhātu). "Above" is pleasant feeling (vedanā); "below" is painful feeling; "across in the middle" is neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. "Above" is upward from the soles of the feet; "below" is downward from the crown of the head; "across in the middle" is in the very middle (vemajjhe). Hence: "above, below, and across in the middle."
