[239] "Above, below, and across in the middle" (uddhaṃ adho tiriyañcāpi majjhe): "Above" is said to be the future; "below," the past; "across in the middle," the present. Or else: "above" is pleasant feeling (vedanā); "below" is painful feeling; "across in the middle" is neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. "Above" is wholesome dhammas; "below," unwholesome dhammas; "across in the middle," indeterminate (abyākata) dhammas. "Above" is the heavenly world (devaloka); "below," the world of loss and woe (apāyaloka); "across in the middle," the world of man (manussaloka). "Above" is the formless element (arūpadhātu); "below," the sensual element (kāmadhātu); "across in the middle," the form element (rūpadhātu). "Above" means upward from the soles of the feet; "below" means downward from the crown of the head; "across in the middle" means in the very middle. Thus: "above, below, and across in the middle."
