[195] **Whom one should know as a brāhmaṇa, a veda-master (yaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ vedaguṃ abhijaññā):** "Brāhmaṇa" — one is a brāhmaṇa because of having banished seven dhammas. Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) is banished; doubt (vicikicchā) is banished; adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa) is banished; lust (rāga) is banished; hatred (dosa) is banished; delusion (moha) is banished; conceit (māna) is banished. For him, evil, unwholesome dhammas are banished — those that defile, that lead to renewed existence, that bring distress, that ripen in suffering (dukkha), that lead to future birth, aging, and death.
"Having banished all evils ('Sabhiya,' said the Blessed One),
the Blessed One, stainless, well concentrated, of steadfast self,
having transcended saṃsāra, complete in himself,
independent, such a one — he is called 'brahmā.'"
**Veda-master (vedagū):** "Veda" is said to be the knowledge (ñāṇa) in the four paths (magga) … having gone beyond all vedas, he is a veda-master.
**Should know (abhijaññā):** should directly know, should understand, should discern, should distinctly know, should penetrate. Hence: "whom one should know as a brāhmaṇa, a veda-master."
