[241] **Do not make craving for existence in this state or that** (bhavābhavāya mākāsi taṇhaṃ): craving for forms (rūpataṇhā), craving for sounds, craving for odours, craving for tastes, craving for tangibles, craving for mental phenomena (dhammataṇhā).
**For existence in this state or that** (bhavābhavāya): for existence in this state or that — for kamma-existence, for renewed existence; for sense-sphere existence, for kamma-existence; for sense-sphere existence, for renewed existence; for form-sphere existence, for kamma-existence; for form-sphere existence, for renewed existence; for formless-sphere existence, for kamma-existence; for formless-sphere existence, for renewed existence; for existence again and again, for destination again and again, for arising again and again, for rebirth-linking again and again, for the production of individual existence again and again — do not make craving (taṇhā), do not generate it, do not engender it, do not produce it, do not bring it forth; abandon it, dispel it, put an end to it, bring it to non-existence. Thus: do not make craving for existence in this state or that.
Therefore the Blessed One said:
Whatever you clearly comprehend, (Dhotaka, said the Blessed One,)
above, below, and across in the middle as well —
having understood this to be a tie in the world,
do not make craving for existence in this state or that.
Together with the conclusion of the verse … "Venerable sir, the Blessed One is my teacher; I am a disciple."
