[249] **"Relying on 'there is nothing,' cross the flood"**: "There is nothing" is the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana). For what reason is the attainment of the sphere of nothingness [called] "there is nothing"? Mindfully entering upon the attainment of the sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), and having emerged from it, one brings that very same consciousness (viññāṇa) to non-existence, causes it to vanish, makes it disappear, and sees: "there is nothing." For that reason the attainment of the sphere of nothingness is [called] "there is nothing." Relying on that, depending upon it, having made it one's object and support, cross, cross over, cross beyond, transcend, and pass beyond the flood of sensuality, the flood of existence, the flood of views, the flood of ignorance. Hence: "relying on 'there is nothing,' cross the flood (ogha)."
