[248] **Contemplating nothingness, mindful (ākiñcaññaṃ pekkhamāno satimā)**: that brahmin is by nature already a gainer of the attainment of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana-samāpatti), yet he does not know the support (nissaya), thinking: "This is my support." To him the Blessed One declares the support, and further declares the path of deliverance (niyyānapatha): having entered upon the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana-samāpatti), and having emerged from it, contemplating the mind (citta) and mental factors (cetasika) arisen therein as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as a disease, as a boil, as a dart, as misery, as an affliction, as disintegrating, as a calamity, as a disaster, as unpleasant, as peril, as a menace, as unstable, as brittle, as not lasting, as no protection, as no shelter, as no refuge, as not becoming a refuge, as vacant, as hollow, as empty, as not-self, as danger, as subject to change, as coreless, as the root of misery, as subject to annihilation, as accompanied by taints (āsava), as murderous, as conditioned, as Māra's bait, as subject to birth, as subject to aging, as subject to illness, as subject to death, as subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair, as subject to origination, as passing away, as without gratification, as danger, as without escape — contemplating, viewing, pondering, examining them.
**Mindful (satimā)**: whatever mindfulness there is — recollection, remembrance, … right mindfulness — this is called mindfulness. Endowed with this mindfulness, fully endowed, having approached, fully approached, having attained, fully attained, possessed of it — he is called mindful. Thus: **contemplating nothingness, mindful**.
**"Upasīva," said the Blessed One (Upasīvāti Bhagavā)**: the Blessed One addresses that brahmin by name, "Upasīva." **Blessed One (Bhagavā)**: this is a term of reverence … a designation verified by realization (sacchikā paññatti), namely "Bhagavā." Thus: **"Upasīva," said the Blessed One**.
