[253] **"Whoever is devoid of lust for all sensual pleasures" (sabbesu kāmesu yo vītarāgo):** "For all" (sabbesu) means: all entirely, all in every way, without remainder, with nothing left over; this word "for all" is an expression of total comprehension. "Sensual pleasures" (kāmesu): by way of summary, sensual pleasures are twofold — objective sensuality (vatthukāma) and subjective sensuality (kilesakāma) … These are called objective sensuality … These are called subjective sensuality.
"Whoever is devoid of lust for all sensual pleasures": whoever, with regard to all sensual pleasures, is devoid of lust — whose lust has been given up, vomited out, released, abandoned, relinquished, suppressed — thus, "whoever is devoid of lust for all sensual pleasures."
**"Thus the venerable Upasīva" (iccāyasmā Upasīvo):** The word "thus" (icca) is a verbal connective (padasandhi). "Venerable" (āyasmā) is a term of affection. "Upasīva" is that brahmin's (brāhmaṇa) name … a designation (abhilāpa) — thus, "thus the venerable Upasīva."
