[267] **"As a flame tossed by the force of the wind (acci yathā vātavegena khittaṃ)":** "flame" (acci) is a term for the crest of a blaze. **"Winds" (vātā):** easterly winds, westerly winds, northerly winds, southerly winds, dusty winds, dustless winds,² cold winds, hot winds, violent winds, verambha winds, winds from wings, winds from the wings of supaṇṇas, winds from palm-leaf fans, winds from fans. **"Tossed by the force of the wind":** tossed by the force of the wind — thrown up, driven, driven away, checked, quelled¹; thus, "as a flame tossed by the force of the wind."
**"'Upasīva,' said the Blessed One":** "Upasīva" — the Blessed One addresses that brahmin by name. **"Blessed One (Bhagavā)":** this is a term of reverence … the name "Bhagavā" is a designation founded on realization (sacchikā paññatti); thus, "'Upasīva,' said the Blessed One."
