[283] **"People say — how, then, is this?"** (*Janā vadanti tayidaṃ kathaṃsu*): **People** (*janā*): khattiyas, brahmins, vessas, suddas, householders, those gone forth, devas, and humans. **Say** (*vadanti*): they speak, they utter, they explain, they declare. **"How, then, is this?"** (*tayidaṃ kathaṃsu*): it is a question out of doubt, a question out of perplexity, a two-sided question, a question that is not one-sided: "Is it thus, or is it not thus? What, then, is it? How, then, is it?" Hence, "People say — how, then, is this?"
