[282] "There are sages in the world (santi loke munayo)": "There are (santi)" means they are, they exist … they are found.
"In the world (loke)": in the world of the states of loss … in the world of the sense bases (āyatana).
"Sages (munayo)": those bearing the name "sage (muni)" — Ājīvakas, Nigaṇṭhas, matted-hair ascetics (jaṭilas), and hermit-ascetics (tāpasas) — thus, "there are sages in the world."
"So said the venerable Nanda (iccāyasmā Nando)": "icca (so)" is a verbal connective (padasandhi). "Āyasmā (venerable)" is a term of affection. "Nanda" is that brahmin's name … a mode of address — thus, "so said the venerable Nanda."
