[304] **"I say they have not crossed over birth and aging"** means: they have not crossed, have not crossed beyond, have not crossed over, have not passed beyond, have not transcended birth (jāti), aging (jarā), and death (maraṇa); not having departed from, not having escaped from, not having gone beyond, not having transcended birth, aging, and death, they revolve within birth, aging, and death; they revolve within the path of the round of rebirth (saṃsāra) — followed by birth, pursued by aging, overcome by sickness, struck down by death, without protection, without shelter, without refuge, having become refugeless — this I say, I declare, I teach, I make known, I establish, I disclose, I analyze, I elucidate, I reveal. Thus, "I say they have not crossed over birth and aging." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Whatever ascetics and brahmins there are here — (Nanda," said the Blessed One,)
"who speak of purity by means of the seen and the heard,
who speak of purity by rules and observances (sīlabbata),
who speak of purity in manifold ways —
even though they live restrained therein,
they have not crossed over birth and aging, I say."
