[372] **So that this might not occur again** — so that this suffering (dukkha) would cease right here, would be stilled, would come to an end, would subside; so that suffering connected with rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) would not be produced again — in the sense-sphere element, the form element, or the formless element; in sense-sphere existence, form existence, or formless existence; in existence with perception, existence without perception, or existence with neither-perception-nor-non-perception; in one-constituent existence, four-constituent existence, or five-constituent existence; in a renewed destination, a renewed rebirth, or a renewed rebirth-linking; in existence, in saṃsāra, or in the round (vaṭṭa) — it would not be generated, would not be brought forth, would not be produced; it would cease right here, would be stilled, would come to an end, would subside. Thus, "so that this might not occur again." Therefore that brahmin said:
"For those standing in the middle of the lake
(thus said the venerable Kappa),
when the flood has arisen, of great peril,
for those overwhelmed by aging and death,
proclaim an island, dear sir.
And do you declare to me an island,
so that this might not occur again."
