[376] **"Beset by aging and death (jarāmaccuparetānaṃ)"** means: touched by aging (jarā), beset by it, weighed down by it, possessed of it; touched by death (maccu), beset by it, weighed down by it, possessed of it; pursued by birth, overspread by aging, overcome by illness, struck down by death; without protection, without shelter, without refuge, having become refugeless — therefore it is said, "beset by aging and death."
