[377] **"An island I proclaim to you, Kappa" (dīpaṃ pabrūmi kappa te):** an island — a shelter, a place of safety, a refuge, a destination and final support — I say, I declare, I teach, I make known, I establish, I disclose, I analyze, I make plain; thus, "an island I proclaim."
**"To you, Kappa" (kappa te):** the Blessed One addresses that brahmin by name, "Kappa." Thus, "an island I proclaim to you, Kappa." Therefore the Blessed One said:
For those standing in the middle of the lake ("Kappa," said the Blessed One),
when the flood has arisen, fraught with great peril,
for those overcome by aging and death,
an island I proclaim to you, Kappa.
