[379] **Not having encumbrance, without grasping (akiñcanaṃ anādānaṃ):** As to "not having encumbrance (akiñcanaṃ)": there is the encumbrance of lust, the encumbrance of hatred, the encumbrance of delusion, the encumbrance of conceit (māna), the encumbrance of view (diṭṭhi), the encumbrance of defilements (kilesa), the encumbrance of misconduct (duccarita). The abandonment of encumbrance, the stilling of encumbrance, the relinquishment of encumbrance, the tranquilizing of encumbrance, is the Deathless, Nibbāna — thus, "not having encumbrance."
As to "without grasping (anādānaṃ)": "grasping" is said of craving (taṇhā) — that lust, that passion, … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. The abandonment of grasping, the stilling of grasping, the relinquishment of grasping, the tranquilizing of grasping, is the Deathless, Nibbāna — thus, "not having encumbrance, without grasping."
