[387] **"They are not Māra's servants (na te mārassa paṭṭhagū)"** means: they are not Māra's servants (paṭṭhā), not his followers in service (paṭṭhacarā), not his attendants (paricārikā), not his menials (pesiyā). They are servants, followers in service, attendants, and menials of the Buddha, the Blessed One. Hence, "they are not Māra's servants."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Those who, having understood this, are mindful,
quenched in this very life (diṭṭhadhammābhinibbutā) —
they do not go under Māra's sway;
they are not Māra's servants."
Together with the conclusion of the verse … "Venerable sir, the Blessed One is my teacher; I am a disciple."
